Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, military interests, etc.)
I am an Army operations research officer. My wife is also an Army officer. We have 2 kids, William and Caroline, that come and spend some gym time with me from time to time. William does Crossfit kids on Saturdays. This is our second time living in northern Virginia, having moved here in 201. After spending a few years in Kansas and Kentucky we are happy to be back again!
What were you doing before CrossFit?
We had been stationed in Colorado for the previous 6 years and spent a good amount of time trail running and mountain biking. I would do a few days in the gym, but didn’t really have a dedicated plan for weights or lifting.
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?
My introductory workout was 3 rounds of rowing, push ups, situps, and wall balls. I loved the challenge of moving continuously within the workout and I realized my overall conditioning wasn’t as good as I thought!
What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
After moving from Colorado to Virginia and our son was born, I was looking for a strength and conditioning program to reintroduce increased physical activity into my daily schedule. A good friend of mine had started CrossFit a few months earlier and gave it a strong recommendation. For Christmas that year my wife signed us both up for an introductory class and I was hooked.
Have you achieved any of those goals?
Absolutely. I am in the gym 4 to 6 days a week, with a couple two a days thrown in as time allows.
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the Gym?
Aside from a number of great friendships, I consistently enjoy better and more consistent physical well being. I work an office job which makes it easy to succumb to a sedentary existence. Crossfit has helped me maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?
I enjoy helping others develop or improve a skill or movement. I also enjoy trying to keep up with Andy, Jordan, RJ, and Ham!
What advice would you give to a newbie joining New Day CrossFit?
Learn, internalize, and become proficient with technique and mobility before going heavy or fast (I still struggle with this). Constantly examine and re-assess your performance and set new goals, both big and small. Document your gains and successes. Learn from everyone.
Something you might not know about me is?
I enjoy woodworking and building furniture in my spare time.
Marken is an excellent representative of New Day CrossFit. His presence at the box makes all the other athletes want to step up their game. Marken leads by example and he puts out maximum effort on whatever task/WOD is in front of him.
We are very pleased to have Marken and his son William as a part of our New Day family.
Stronger families mean tighter hugs…
